Tapestry of Grace Year 3-Week 7: Reshaping Europe and South America

Week 7! Hard to believe we are already almost finished with the first nine weeks of this year!

We did a really fun science experiment this week!  The kids asked to do it again and again!  They learned that the presence of calcium in hard water means water doesn't bubble up with soap as much as regular water. Chemistry is fun!


I love how Elemental Science requires the kids to draw pictures and make observations and conclusions in their notebooks for each experiment!  

This week we began a three week study on the formation of South America and Simon Bolivar, the Libertador!  I had never studied his life before, so I learned a ton about the history of South America and how it was influenced by what was going on in Europe and North America.  We loved the title "South America: The Continent and its Countries."  It was published by Tapestry of Grace I think, specifically for this year.  It was the perfect combination of fun activities and information.  This week, we learned about Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. 


The kids also LOVED this book about Adoniram Judson.  They asked to read it all day long.  We couldn't finish it fast enough for them.  A great story of his life told gently enough for children.  We all enjoyed hearing about how much he wanted to come to India, but wasn't allowed to stay here!

And, here's a random picture of Kiryn doing a nature study for Classical Writing Primer.  She's been going outside and finding a leaf, and we've been searching a great site I found to match it to the type of tree it comes from.  Then she's to write about the tree, draw pictures of the leaf and the seed.  She's been having a lot of fun with this!

It was a great week, and we're looking forward to getting more into South America the next two weeks!

    What is that website for identifying the leaf? My kids would love this type of research! - Christine

      Christine, it's a website specific to identifying South Asian/Indian plants. I'm not sure it would be helpful for you! There are several out there though! I also love a lot of the Charlotte Mason recommendations on Nature Study at Simply Charlotte Mason or Ambleside Online. I'm incorporating more and more of these ideas into what we're doing... : ) I'll write a post about that soon, once I get it all figured out for us.

Commonplace Essays with Writing & Rhetoric

It bears repeating.  The Writing & Rhetoric series by Classical Academic Press is really amazing.  My 5th and 6th graders are in Ch. 5 of the sixth book. They are learning to write commonplace essays, which are six paragraph essays refuting bad character traits.  They wrote their first essay this week.  We were behind schedule, and weren't going to finish for class. The Trivium: Grammar, Dialectic and Rhetoric

Last spring,  I went to the Great Homeschool Convention in Fort Worth, TX with a big question. For a couple of years, I had been studying the liberal arts on my own. I'd read pretty widely and thought I understood the first three arts, the trivium.  As I began to try to understand the quadrivium, I had read The Liberal Arts Tradition by Clark and Jain, as well as Beauty for Truth's Sake by Stratford Caldecott. I still didn't even begin to understand what the quadrivium was about. I went to the conference ready to ask people for their thoughts on how to teach the quadrivium. I left pretty unsatisfied. Picking Up Meryn!

We made it to Ethiopia after a long day of travel!  We had a morning flight to Delhi, then a 15 hour layover, so we got to spend the day with some good friends in Delhi for the day.  We even got to sleep a few hours before going to the airport at midnight.  We had a very smooth process getting checked in and to our gate.  Kiryn was an amazing travel companion. I'm so thankful to have her with me. We left at 3 a.m. from Delhi, arrived a bit late in Addis, but had no line for a visa or immigration, got some money from the ATM, got our bags straight off the belt and found our driver outside.  Certainly, mercies from the Lord to make everything so easy. I'm not used to traveling alone... We got checked into the hotel, and hurriedly got a little unpacked, showered and changed, and I made all the 25 or so Thank You cards with tip gifts for the nannies to take to the care center.
