Homeschool Classes Fall 2021

In addition to directing Derby Scholé Community, I have been teaching some drop-off classes for middle and high school homeschool students in Derby the past three years.  I really love inviting others into what we're doing as a family to generate great discussions with my kids and their friends.

If you've got a homeschool high schooler that needs some friends and a guide through books, please consider my classes for this fall!  Preference will be given to students that live in Derby because one main goal for these classes is to build true community that will continue outside of class.

For more information, please contact me by filling out this form.

1. American History: This group will meet only once per quarter. Families will purchase and use Dave Raymond's American History course at home.  Each quarter, the course assigns a project to be completed by the students.  We will meet together for the students to present their project to each other four times over the course of the school year.  1 high school credit

2. American Literature:  From Hawthorne to Harper Lee, students will read one book per month, or a collection of short stories as we journey through American literature.  I will provide some historical context and information on the author's life and teach tools of close reading. Students will be expected to keep a commonplace book and contribute to class discussions in meaningful ways.  This class will meet twice per month.  Limit 10 students. 1/2 high school credit.  $50/year (3 seats open)

3. The Lost Tools of Writing Level One: a class on thinking really.  We will read short stories from American literature, learn to discuss them, find issues, create arguments, and defend them in writing.  This is an introductory rhetoric course that will introduce the five common topics and first three cannons of rhetoric: invention, arrangement and elocution.  This class would meet once per week. Limit 6 students. 1/2 high school credit.  $100/year  (1 seats open, with two students pending for that seat)
